Competition doesn’t slip at Fruita’s Anna Banana race

Cooper and Gabbard lead the Wolverines’ cross country team in Grand Junction

The competition level doesn’t slip at the Anna Banana Memorial Wildcat Invitational in Grand Junction.

Bayfield High School found that out Saturday at the event hosted by Fruita Monument High School.

The Wolverines’ boys cross country team finished 10th, and the girls team did not qualify for team scoring after only fielding four runners.

Trevor Gabbard paced Bayfield’s boys team in 16th place, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 15.8 seconds.

Alex Knight was 38th for BHS in 17:57.8, Sloan Mazur took 67th in 19:20.2, Justis Herrera finished 79th in 19:56.1, Bryan Gram was 81st in 20:22, and Joey Sandrey took 92nd in 21:21.3.

Bayfield’s Rachel Cooper was out front of the Wolverines’ girls team in 29th with a time of 21:54.1.

Lexa Fleming followed in 50th at 23:22.6 for BHS, Amber Johnson was 58th in 24:11.9, and Brittany Birk took 75th in 28:05.

Montrose’s Ian Meek won the boys race in 15:50.8, and Carly Volkmer of Eagle Valley was first in the girls race at 19:44.1.

BHS will make a much longer drive for its next race: the Desert Twilight Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday in Phoenix, Arizona.
